Uloop Morning Scoop: Dreamers, Nate, Good News for U. Chicago and Halloween on a College Student Budget

By Uloop Staff on October 9, 2017

It’s sort of a holiday Monday, but meh, you’re Monday either way. Luckily, the Uloop Morning Scoop for October 9 is here to fill your brain with knowledge :

President willing to protect ‘Dreamers’ — for a price

President Trump is willing to engage in a deal across party lines to extend protection for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants — the so-called “Dreamers” –  but only if lawmakers agree to accept his stance on immigration policies.

The president’s list of demands for the DACA Act include “overhauling the country’s green-card system, a crackdown on unaccompanied minors entering the country, and building his promised wall along the southern border,” according to the Associated Press.

Many Democrats have said those policies would not be considered. “In a letter to House and Senate leaders released by the White House Sunday, Trump said the priorities were the product of a ‘a bottom-up review of all immigration policies’ that he had ordered “to determine what legislative reforms are essential for America’s economic and national security,” the AP reported.

Expect this topic to be in the news much more in the coming weeks.

Hurricane Nate hits the Southeast, but not as hard as feared

Hurricane Nate made landfall in the Gulf Coast late Sunday night with heavy rains and flooding to a weary southeast US that is still recovering from previous hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

USA Today reports, “Nate crashed into the Gulf Coast as a Category 1 hurricane Saturday near the mouth of the Mississippi River before making landfall again early Sunday near Biloxi, Miss. The hurricane was the first to make landfall in the state since Katrina devastated much of the Gulf Coast in 2005.”

So far up to 100,000 people have lost power, but the hurricane’s weakening to a tropical storm has proven a silver lining to the hurricane-battered region.

TODAY IN A TWEET

Like we said, it’s kind of a holiday Monday, but is it really?

University of Chicago professor wins Nobel Prize in ecomonics

CBS News reports this morning that, “the Nobel economics prize has been awarded to Richard Thaler of the University of Chicago for research showing how people’s choices on economic matters – whether on savings or game shows like “Deal or No Deal” – are not always rational.

Thaler won the prize for what the Swedish Academy of Sciences (which hands out the prizes) called “understanding the psychology of economics.”

Halloween costumes on a college student budget… like, you know, cheap

I’m a mouse, duh. (Image: YouTube Screenshot)

Cassidy Camp from Florida State University is thinking ahead. About 21 days ahead, to be exact.

As she writes, “The weather is getting cooler, decorations are out, pumpkin spice has infiltrated all of our favorite restaurants… it’s the Halloween season again, and spooky fans everywhere are freaking out!”

That doesn’t mean college students have any more money, though, so make sure to read all her ideas for great costumes that don’t cost much.

OK, let’s get out there and do Monday. And hope this week is better than last week, if you know what we mean.

And remember, you should be using Uloop to find a part time job on your campus, connect with a tutor or get a head start on housing for next year.  And don’t forget, if you’re into that email thing:
